Meet Our Members

Christian Dick, Firefighter
Christian is originally from Edwardsville, Illinois and moved here with his family in June 2015. He is a graduate of First Flight High School.
Christian came to the Department in December of 2015, as a Junior Member. He always looked up to first responders as a child, and has a strong drive to serve his community. Christian learned about the Junior Firefighter Program and the Department through fellow member and friend, Jason Williams. Christian loves the family atmosphere and “playing with all of the cool toys”. Christian has since become a Fire Fighter and working toward completion of Firefighter I & II.
When he is not busy with school or responding to emergencies, Christian spends his time hunting, fishing and serving as a lifeguard.
Different than most that move to our Outer Banks paradise, Christian and his family moved here without ever vacationing or visiting the area. However, they found a place to call home here in Southern Shores.
Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Department is honored to have Christian a valued member.

Christopher Watts, Firefighter
Chris was born in Kitty Hawk and is a graduate of First Flight High School. He joined the Department in July of 2015 as a Junior Firefighter. Chris visited the station with a fellow junior member during training on Tuesday night. He fell in love with the Department, and has remained an active member since.
He enjoys the family environment, meeting new people, making friends, and hanging out, “with a lot of the fantastic guys”. Chris has found a second home here at the station, often times he can be found playing video games with the guys in the dayroom. Through his volunteer experience, Chris has found a passion and a desire to pursue a career in public safety and firefighting.
When Chris is not busy volunteering at the Department, he is busy working at OBX Top Shop building custom kitchens. As with many natives on the Outer Banks, Chris is a fisherman at heart and a Jeep enthusiast.

Stephen Hines, Firefighter
Stephen was born in Kitty Hawk and is a graduate of First Flight High School. He joined the Department in May of 2015 as a Junior Firefighter for many reasons. Stephen has the desire to impact people’s lives in a positive way and generally enjoys helping people in a time of need. He has always had a fascination regarding fire trucks and the fire service. When he was a young boy, he would always tell his mother, “We have to go see where they were going” when a fire engine would pass them. Stephen considers firefighting his dream job, and plans to pursue a Degree in Fire Science and Technology.
He enjoys the family environment, and the opportunity to be introduced to a great and funny group of volunteers, who are always willing to teach him new things. Stephen has learned more than he could have ever anticipated during his first year with the department. Learning life lessons about brotherhood and respect, as well as how to handle various situations that he may encounter, Stephen has embraced the culture and the mission of what Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Department provides for the community.
When Stephen is not busy volunteering at the Department, he enjoys playing sports, hanging out with his friends, going on adventures and spending time with his family.
A lesser known fact about Stephen is that he hates to get his shoes dirty, and has a pair for every occasion. Good thing he has a pair of black boots for his firefighting activities, as they will not show the dirt!
Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Department is honored to have Stephen as a valued member.

John is a native to Virginia, born and raised in Orange VA, and living in Culpeper, Virginia for last 20 years. In 2008, John retired and moved to Southern Shores where he has proudly owned property since 1997.
A retired veteran of the United States Army reserves, with more than 25 years of service, John retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation, and is responsible for acquiring the land that many of us frequently travel, including the Springfield Interchange, the interstate routes 95/395/495.
A native to public service, and desire to give back to his community, John became a member of the Department in April 2009, based on fellow member, Sandy Sanderson’s recommendation. Serving as a Junior Firefighter in his teenaged years, John has always enjoyed being a firefighter and transferring his knowledge to new members. With the sense of commitment and desire to serve the community flowing through each individual fireman within the Department, “we really do have FUN and enjoy each other’s company”. On top of his role as a firefighter, John also volunteers his time serving as Vice Chairman on both the Board of Directors as well as the Fire Service Real Estate.
In addition to volunteering at the Department, John also donates his time to his church, Ruthies Kitchen Food Bank, along with other charitable activities. When he is not busy serving in various areas of the Community, John enjoys spending time with his wife, touring the United States in their RV, and singing in the OBX Presbyterian Church Choir, OBX Chorus as well as other choruses.
A lesser known fact about John is his time dedicated to our Country in the United States Army as a Drill Sergeant “with the Smokey the Bear Hat and all. I trained individuals in the basic skills needed to become soldiers, not an easy process.”
“Many good memories and, hopefully, skills and knowledge pasted to those I trained”

Lacy Chronister, Firefighter
Originally from the Tidewater area, Lacy has lived in the Outer Banks for more than half her life, moving here to live with her grandparents at the age of 17.
As a 911 Telecommunicator and Reserve Deputy for the Dare County Sheriff’s Office, Lacy is dedicated to public service. After watching her god brother, who is now a Lieutenant with Norfolk Fire & Rescue, complete the Virginia Beach Volley Academy while she was in high school, Lacy developed an interest in firefighting but was under the impression that she would never be able to find success in the field due to an injured knee. She joined in 1998 with intentions of being a support member, after being persuaded to “check the department out” by her neighbor and then Deputy Chief Dave Sanders. Lacy soon found that, with the support and encouragement of the members, she was climbing ladders and driving fire trucks. She went on to earn her North Carolina Firefighter II Certification in 2006 and has enjoyed being a public service figure ever since, giving back to her community. Lacy added, “It always helps when you see a little kid truly awe struck when they see a ‘real firefighter’. It kind of melts your heart”.
In addition to her role as a public service figure, Lacy has spent years dappling in the arts, having her own small business, selling various products and providing photography services to local shops. Taking 14 years of classical ballet, tap and jazz dancing and learning to play several instruments, Lacy has always had a love of the arts.
